Life, the universe, and everything else (42!)

A quick little run-down on what's been happening in my life so far:

-I'm almost out of community college.  Yay!  Just two more days of torture (especially philosophy--I hate the subject.  It's just...all thoughts and no concrete evidence to back up theories.  At least in anthropology I can go out into society and observe people and that's my evidence right there for theories but philosophy is so abstract and it frustrates me so so much.  And I liked the anthropological class on religion over the philosophical class on religion.  I think I can write a paper on how they're so different from each other even though both classes are about religion).

-I decided to go to UCI.  Because it's closer to home.  And I don't think I can handle living in a dorm room, personally.  (I can handle it, I think.  I just don't think I'd particularly like it all that much.  My space=mine.  And, hell, I like living at home in my own room with my own computer and I've heard horror stories about dorm rooms in the past from some friends and I don't want to go through that.)

Plus, because it's closer to home, why live there if I can easily commute (such as by bus, because parking will probably be undoubtedly complicated) and save money in the long run.

Plus I can minor or major in European studies.  UCSB only had a major for medieval studies, which seeemed pretty limited, if I wanted to double major or major and minor for anthropology and European studies.  And UCLA--IDK about the classes there.  I just like the European studies more because, if I decide to do something with that, it'll be more broader than narrow.  And I like that idea.

-behind on TV shows.  But I'm okay with that.  And I don't feel like catching up on NCIS: LA so all I've been watching is Merlin and Doctor Who and, on BBC America even though I have it on my computer, Ashes to Ashes.  (They aren't using subtitles!  I remember when they'd spontaneously use subtitles.  They're improving.  Now if they'd not cut the episode down and air it in its entirety, then it'd be awesome, and if it'd get out of its 'show repeats of random reality shows' funk then I'd like the channel.)

-I haven't mentioned how much I like Amy on Doctor Who, have I?  Because I like Amy.  She's awesome.  Oh, and the new Doctor is awesome too, but Amy :D

-Merlin's still cute.  (The show, not the character.  Although Colin Morgan is still cute.)(But the show is just cute and adorable.  And fun.)

-Shows I'll watch this summer: The Gates (IDK what it is about but I've heard it involves the supernatural of some kind so I'm all, 'Yay non-drama-like show!  Paranormal type of show!'  I'll check it out), The Bridge (it stars Aaron Douglas from BSG and I've always had a soft spot for Tyrol in seasons 1 and 2 of BSG so I'll check it out), The Good Guys (it's made by Matt Nix who did Burn Notice so I'm putting all my faith and trust into the assumption that if Nix created something as awesome as Burn Notice then The Good Guys will be as awesome.  Or at least good), Burn Notice (got season 3 on DVD today and I haven't seen most of season 3.  And I've forgotten what went on in season 1 and 2.  This calls for a marathoning of the show in the future.  Which will be really fun.  If there's a show that's fun to marathon, it's Burn Notice.  It's the explosions and action and the characters that make it fun), White Collar, Psych (as if I would put it off my schedule.  As if.  In an alternate parallel universe my parallel-self would even watch it because it's that awesome and cool), Being Human, and Eureka.  Oh, yes, I forgot about Covert Affairs.  I want to check that out as well.  If it's anything like White Collar and Burn Notice, then I'll probably like Covert Affairs.  (Again with that faith and trust that if USA has other good shows that I like then I'll probably like something else that it has.  It didn't work so well with Royal Pains, though.  I didn't really get attatched to that show as much as Burn Notice, White Collar, or Psych.)

-and then I read about this show that stars Callum Keith Rennie and it's called Shattered and I'm so hoping some American network will show it (it's Canadian.  Well, Canadian-made show and will be shown on a Canadian channel, from what I've read, but no word yet on American channels) because it stars CKR.  I liked Leoben in BSG because CKR played him.  And the show seems interesting.  (Because it stars CKR.  Shallow?  Me?  Why, yes, maybe.)

-there are these land communites on LJ that sometimes focus on a show and there are contests and games in those communities and it's helped me break out of my shell of shyness on the Internet.  (My shell of shyness extends to the Internet.  One reason I don't leave comments: I'm shy.  Well, sort of self-conscious/shy of leaving comments and I don't know why.  It's not that I don't like anyone that I don't leave comments, I'm just...hesitant.  I so don't know what my problem is...) but yes, I've been participating like crazy this weeek in the one I'm in, trying to help my team win because I'm like that, and I've been doing challenges I wouldn't normally do otherwise.

Okay, the massive post I promised a few days ago will be this one.

So.  Real life stuff first:

Stuff about school under here )

Okay, I think I dealt with all the real life stuff.  Now TV shows.

First, let me admit that when it comes to TV shows I am so bad at watching them.  Or getting interested in some of them.  It's like if I realize that I don't like the show or I'm only interested in half or less of the characters, then I just stop watching it.  Or if I get bored with it.  I swear this year I've stopped watching half the shows I would probably normally watch, just because I realized there was nothing I was watching the show for.

Bones )

Doctor Who )

Merlin )

Ashes to Ashes )

In other news, there was no art class tonight lol :D seriously.  I think I was grinning like a madman when some other student told us there was no class and all I could think of was, 'Yes, I get to watch Ashes to Ashes live tonight!'

I sort of felt like how Shawn and Gus feel when they solve a case and they start jumping up and down, like in the first episode.  That excited/happy feeling.

(It's not that I don't like stained art, it just seems like eternity in the class.  6:00-9:45 and I'm way behind and have to work on the final design and buy glass and sealing wax for the copper foil design and there's three weeks left in the semester for me to finish the final design and finish the copper foil one.  I'm behind.)

So...I guess I'll go read now.  (Either The Winds of War, Bloodthirsty (a mystery novel in a series), Well-Schooled Murder, Robinson Crusoe, First Lord's Fury, Jousts and Tournaments (yes, I read about the history of medieval Europe for fun), or Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle volume 2.  I think I'm reading more at the moment than I'm watching TV, TBH.  I love reading so much.)(Actually, I think I'm reading way too many books, which means I need to go finish one so I'll have less to read.  I've been neglecting Winds of War so much and I want to finish the novel.)

First, thank you so much [livejournal.com profile] boheme06 for the virtual snowflake :)

Second, it's almost Christmas.  Wow.  Where did all of December go?

Third, got a C in calculus, thank God.  I thought I was going to fail that class.  But I'm happy I succeeded (or at least passed it) in the class because I'm not taking math next year (it conflicts with choir practice on Thursday nights) and I wanted to at least not fail a class.  (Considering how I got an F on the last test before the final, I was very worried).  I also got three A's and a B.  Overall, I think I did fairly well :) so I'm happy about that.

Fourth, I have a month and three weeks off until spring semester starts again.  Either I can attempt to work up my courage, walk into Barnes and Noble and ask if they're accepting applications or not, or I can take up a massive awesome knitting project.  I'll try both.  (I have this fear of asking people things.  IDK why.  I just do.)

I may also finish The Dresden Files series in my spare time and go through at least many other books.  If I'm not catching up on TV shows either on DVD or on my DVR.

Overall, I have free time.  I'm bound to be bored.

Fifth, my birthday was on Sunday and we had the Festival of Christmas Music at church (a weekend long concert.  One performance on Saturday night and on Sunday it was the regular singing in the morning plus two more performances in the evening).  Needless to say, I was totally exhausted Monday.  But I managed to squeeze in some fun for myself on Sunday between 11 AM and 3 PM.  I went off to Disneyland with my dad, got a birthday button, got annual passes (the last time I had annual passes was when I was 5, I believe.  That was so long ago.  It's fun having passes again), and then went back off to church.

Monday was more the day of fun for my birthday.  I opened presents, went to Disneyland again (just because I could), and relaxed.

Birthday cake )

Anyway, I've got all presents wrapped and under the tree.

Also, thing I learned: people from the south barely decorate around outside the house for Christmas?  (My mom is from Virginia and when she moved out here she would make fun of all the decorations.  Hell, I would do.  Inflatible Santas?  They may look fun, but I wouldn't want one in the front yard.)  Or, from what my mom told me, they would put lights in the windows and not do any serious/heavy decorations with lights like we do.  (Also inflatible snow globes with actual 'snow' in the 'globe' that would swirl around.  Looks fun from a distance.)

I really want to visit Virginia again and get in touch with my Southern roots.  And visit Colonial Williamsburg.  It must look really pretty in the winter with snow and everything.

Tomorrow I'm planning on hitting the bookstore for some personal shopping (like, say, a new copy of Catcher in the Rye) and maybe a few extra presents for the family if I see anything good.

Also, knitted my dog a sweater!  I need to take pictures and post them up, but he looks so cute in it.  I doubt if he'll ever need it, as lately it's been more windy than chilly, but there could be a time when it's really cold and he'll need it.  So at least I know he has a sweater if he's really cold and he can use it.  Or I can make him use it.  I tried it on him when I finished it and he wasn't attacking the yarn, so that's good.

Right now I'm finishing up a scarf and I'm also in the middle of knitting arm warmers.  I don't know when I'm ever going to use them, but they looked pretty and I wanted to knit the pretty and use a cable needle.

Until next time, hopefully everyone has a happy holiday/merry Christmas/feliz navidad/happy Haunakah/Kwanza/(I think I covered all my bases for holidays, right?).

I met Mark Shepard...and Alan Tudyk and Jewel Staite

I know I haven't posted in over a month. Or less.

I've been busy with school, NaNoWriMo, and family/life, in that order. This is the last semester I am taking 17 units. I'm so stressed this year I've already decided to take yoga next year. And just other random classes.

Hopefully this is my last year at community college. I'm filling out an application at the moment for the UC universities and have to send it in by the end of this month so I can get in next fall. I'm hoping they don't raise fees for classes/whatnot when I get there next year :/ when I get anywhere. If I get anywhere. (I have this fear all the colleges I apply to will reject me. I'm hoping for UCI as I don't have to really move there to go there and I can just stay at home.)

Anyway, I thought I'd talk about my NaNoWriMo and show who the characters are and 'if I could cast it who would play what?' sort of thing.

NaNoWriMo )And Firefly convention? OMG. So much fun. I loved it so totally much. (Much more than the Supernatural one in March 2008. It was good, but it didn't have that sense of family that the Firefly conventions have. Or maybe that's just me being a Browncoat, so I'm biased naturally, but really, I felt more comfortable at the convention this year than Supernatural last year.)

I have no idea when I'll have free time to post pictures up, but I will. Soon. Of what little I took of the stars. (I mostly listened/hung around the vendor's room/spent lots of money/bid on stuff?/had fun.)

Now it's time to go do homework and take a shower.

So.  School.

Wow.

It's already the end of August?

Summer went by so fast.

(Yes, I still need to post photos from my trip.  I'll get around to that eventually before December or Christmas.)

Finished all of Merlin, so I can move onto watching some more of Dollhouse, Eureka, and Psych from last night.  I'll probably to that all today.  I also want to go to Barnes and Noble as a sort of 'summer's over, school's starting!' celebration I'll celebrate by myself because who else really wants to celebrate school starting?  (That, and I have no one who'll celebrate with me.  I am so anti-social.)

Got all my books for my classes :D my American Government textbook is so misleading.  It looks like a magazine.  When I first got it and the person was ringing up all the books, I stared at it thinking, 'Is that a magazine?  Did they give me a magazine?  WTF?'

Example )

A couple weeks ago my English teacher sent out an e-mail to the class telling us what we'd be reading and what we should read ahead.  Signs of a good/dedicated teacher.  Making sure the class is reading ahead.  I think I might like English so far.

I didn't need another math textbook, thank God.  ($192 for a math textbook.  I think.  IDK.  It's high though. Like $150+ high.) I just decided to get the student answer book that went with the textbook, just in case.  Hopefully I'll do well in calculus this semester.

And transferring--I should meet with a counselor.  (I'm a bit anti-social.  And anti-talking-on-the-telephone.  I'll do it if I have no other choice, but I'll see if I don't need to make an appointment with a counselor, out of politeness, and if not I'll just go in and meet with a counselor and ask about transferring.  Do I ever want to get out of community college...I am ready to get out of community college.)

Until later...peace.  (Except not really...)(DHSAB quotage FTW!)(I miss HIMYM.  I need to watch an episode.  I'm just disappointed I signed up for another Monday night class so I'm missing new episodes of HIMYM.  But I can tape them, so all is not lost, but still...)

School's gotten expensive 0_0 I mean I know it already was, but the tuition was raised from $20 to $26 per unit and the parking fee from $16 to $30.  Makes me fear what UCI will be like it/when I ever transfer there.  (Or any other four-year college.)

Still uploading trip photos onto photobucket to post on my Livejournal and make a big fun-filled, picture-filled post about my trip.  Hopefully that'll be this weekend...

I'm just mainly posting this entry to say that hey, I made a Firefly music video!  My first one, disregarding the badly made one I made a few years back set to the song Bad Company made with clips I found on the Interent because I failed to have my own DVD ripper for my laptop.  But now I do (have a DVD ripper) so I can rip scenes and make videos.  Or a video.  It's hard work.  And it's not even that good a video.  I've seen better.  But damn it, I tried so I should be proud of myself and share it with the world.  So I actually used my Youtube account for the first time ever (forgot I had one there, actually.  I went to sign up, discovered that my username was already taken, and I was thinking, 'Either somebody used my username which I use all over the 'net and decided it would be fun to be velociraptor52, or I already have an account' (the only problem is I forgot when I signed up) and uploaded a video to my account.  Yay).

Video here.  I used the song Remains from the Dollhouse episode Epitaph One because I thought it fit nicely with what I wanted.  And because I wanted to use the song.

Until whenever I update again next time, good night.  (Now I have a strange urge to go watch The Truman Show.  What was that quote he always said?)

Well.  It's that time of the year again.

Tech week for the church musical.

*is tired* (and my eyelid keeps twitching--sign of not getting enough sleep?)

And I hate curling my hair, even with the hair rollers.  Too time consuming.  I'm thinking of just coming home from math early tomorrow, like say when it's break time I'll sneak out of the room, because usually on Mondays/Wednesdays I get home around 4:30, my make-up call time is 5 (though I may change it to later if the make-up is fast), and there's not really enough time to curl said hair between that time and getting make-up on, plus the costume.

So yay to missing some of class?  I'll e-mail the teacher to let him know I'll be missing some of the class, just as a warning.

I miss sleep.  I need sleep.  I want another spring break.

And this weather--I think April is pretending to be June--it was about 90 degrees yesterday and I'm just hoping it'll cool down.

I have reviews of Dollhouse I'll probably do on Saturday (I'm missing this week's episode due to performance #1.  Hopefully the AT&T Universe box thingy tapes it.  It's like a TiVo, but not really).  And I'm so behind on Castle and HIMYM.

(And my costume?  Love love love it.  I'm hoping I get to keep it.  And my shoes?  So not awesome, even though they're mine.  They were about ready to fall off during act 2 yesterday night.  I'm afraid of losing my shoe now during performances and rehearsals.  Hopefully that won't happen, though.)

Randomness

The one thing I like about livejournal (and this goes for facebook as well) is how everyone is connected to each other in some type of way.  It's like I'd be randomly looking at a friend of a friend's friend list, or just a friend's list, and see that they are also friends with people I'm friends with as well.

I like that connected-ness feeling.  It reminds me of high school.  Except on the Internet.

Meanwhile, one week left of school until spring break and yay April 7!  (The Dresden Files book 11 comes out that day; unfortunately, I can't read it until summer for two very different reasons: 1. it's my mom's birthday present so she reads it first and 2. I haven't even read books 7-10 yet and mom's read all of them so what's the use of reading book 11 if I haven't read all the books yet?)

I still need to watch Castle and How I Met Your Mother from Monday night :/ I'll get around to that this weekend.  Or maybe possibly tomorrow hopefully in between doing homework and finishing the Codex Alera book 4 (almost done--just about 50 pages left to go! and then it'll be onto book 5! and then waiting until book 6!...maybe I shouldn't rush to finish it if I have to wait until December to read book 6).  Which yay tomorrow Dollhouse!  And I have no rehearsal tomorrow night so I can just lay around the house and do nothing.  (Okay, planning on going to Barnes and Noble and  this new coffee place that opened up nearby and I want to see if their ice blended mocha is any good but that's about it--the rest of the weekend will be devoted to finishing said book 4 and doing homework and studying for tests.)

I'm thinking this summer I'll read the rest of the Dresden Files.  Only because I'll have ample time to go through them all and not speed read (when Harry Potter 7 was coming out I was trying to finish books 1-6 before getting 7 and I failed at that goal.  I was thinking earlier that maybe I could read books 1-10 of The Dresden Files before 11 comes out, but seeing my free time and how I have none in the near future until April ends, I can't really that).

...somehow I have convinced my dad that we should take a trip to Washington (the state) this summer.

...and he agreed with me.

So I guess I'll be going to Washington this summer yay?

And it was quite easy convincing him too only because he's as sick and tired as I am of seeing Lake Tahoe.  After 20 years there (and maybe around 15 years of what I can remember of seeing the sights) and seeing every possible same tree and rock every summer, I need to see new sights and new trees and new rocks.  And a new lake.

I've got nothing against Lake Tahoe but seriously, we need our own family vacation minus the extended family.  Which the last time we took that was in 2004 and we saw extended family back east for part of the time when we went to Virginia.

*sigh* I have five sections of math homework I need to finish by next Wednesday, a test in math next Wednesday, two midterm essays I need to write.  And I need to call in for an appointment this Friday to see a counselor at school to see if I'm on the right track to transfering.

But I'll just try to finish the math homework first--I don't want to procrastinate anymore what with all these tests coming up.

So tired...

this morning I had rehearsal from 9-1:30 PM for this concert the choirs are doing at church and so we had this really long rehearsal that involved lots of standing and folder holding (which now?  my left arm is sore) and lots of singing and now I just want to crawl into bed and sleep forever...

or at least until tomorrow (thank God; the first concert for tonight is over; all I have to get through is the two more tomorrow night).

And now I have songs from the concert stuck in my head, which really isn't all that pleasant because they keep on repeating themselves over and over and over.

The one thing I like is the cold here in southern California.  While we may not get snow (really) we do get frost in the morning if it's cold enough.  Which last Sunday there was frost on my car's windshield and I couldn't find the scraper to scrape it off so I used my hand to wipe away some of the ice.  Which, note to everyone: don't do it unless you want your hand really numb *was born and raised in southern California so never learned the proper way to scrape ice/snow off cars* well, I did learn, but I was in a hurry and thought, 'Screw it, I'll use my hand'.  Plus I couldn't find the scraper; apparently it was in my dad's car.  Well, now I know that for tomorrow morning.

But I like it in the mornings when there's frost on the grass and frost on the roof of the houses and it sort of looks like snow, without it being snow.

And I'm looking forward to wearing my scarves I've knitted; there's this one pretty green one I'm planning to wear tomorrow morning for church.  (Speaking of, apparently the musical for next year for spring is called Broadway Our Way and we're doing songs from Wicked and Les Miserables (still need to read that book...) and other musicals that have Christian messages/themes in them...where does Wicked have Christianity in it?  Or messages/themes of?...because I can't really think of any but I haven't listened to the entire soundtrack either so...)

And it's been raining something awful this past week; major storm, apparently, or something like that.  And I heard the news say it could rain on Christmas next week so, fingers crossed (hee, reminded myself of DHSAB).

Which, as for DHSAB, got my DVD already.  I thought it would ship here Monday (it originally said it would; only because I chose 1 day shipping versus two day; I got a DVD for my friend for Christmas and wanted it here before Christmas) but it got here early.  It came Thursday night, which was a horrible time (hah pun) for it to come, as I was leaving for choir practice when it did come.

Still haven't watched the DVD yet; although I've seen it a million times already so it can wait, but the special features/easter eggs!

My grades came in for fall semester.

Straight A's.

Oh yeah.

Seriously.  I thought I would get a B in pre-calculus.  So I saw an A and I was, 'Oh, look, an A in math.  Oh, look, lots of A's.  Oh, look, I actually got all A's for the first time in my life.  Yay?'

My mom was all bragging this morning to the people in choir.  It was funny, 'cause it's not that big a deal (to me at least---come on.  The classes were easy.  We were practically given the answers to the tests in sociology, there was open book tests in physical anthropology, there were take-home tests for archaeology.  The only classes I struggled with were math, mostly, and psychology.  And 17 units?  So not enough classes.  I like taking a lot of classes; sadly, the maximum is only 18 units) and everyone thought it was a big deal (to paraphrase my mom: "Seventeen units plus two choirs [at church] with all the rehearsals, singing all four Sundays in a month, and she got straight A's."  Yeah, really not that big a deal...)

(But come on, straight A's.  I've wanted to do that since high school, always have gotten close, with like a B in one or two classes, and now I achieve my goal in college.)(Which was what I wanted to achieve this semester; it all works out in the end.)

Tired now.  Sleep now...

but I'll go watch Dr. Horrible/play Fable 2 before I go to bed; I'm just so exhausted.

Re: my DHSAB icon.  So appropriate; he sort of looks sleepy in that icon and I'm all sleepy so...

And the other day I went to The Coffee Bean (I was going to get an ice blended mocha, but I was already cold from the rain and didn't need further coldness) and there were all these little stickers up (from people who decided to leave a message? who donated something, like money? *shrugs*) and I saw one that said R.I.P. Rollie Guerria(?) and it was so random and I saw it and I was all like, 'Oh hey, Rollie, I remember him'.  Last year he died in a car accident.  I wasn't really friends with him, but I, you know, recognized him...we were like acquantinces(?) more.  We were about the same age, I think I had a class with him in middle school, and I knew that he had died, but it's like I sort of forgot he had until I saw the message left for him.  And it was so random that I saw it.  And weird, because I could have not seen it but I did see it.  I hate how life works like that.

Okay, bed now.  Good night!

Oh my gosh, it's almost December.

Yay?

That's it; next semester (2 weeks left of this semester!!) I will:

A. Not take a 7:00 AM math class.  Or any other class, for that matter (that starts at 7 AM, I mean.  I just re-read this part and I was all like, 'No, I will take classes next year!...just not 7 AM ones...;).  For next year is the church musical (re: will be bad.  I know it.  So much less strong singers this year; we've lost Chelsea, Brooke, I think Chris Kuzmich will come back next year which is yay because he's good, but all the female good singers are gone.  Sandy's still around.  Well, not really.  She's assistant director for chapel choir and this is deja vu 'cause I think I talked about this last month in a journal entry but oh well but she's magically also in chapel choir as well.

Helping out the altos.

And then when we practice Buxtehude, and song we're doing for Christmas, Hanan helps the altos out.  Hanan, as in director of choir.

Which is just very sad, IMO, because we don't have that much strong altos.  And everybody doesn't sing out.

Which, I know, guilty here.  I don't sing quite that loud.  Only when other loud people are singing, then I sing loud.  But I'm not a good singer and...I don't know.  But I know I'm the pot calling the kettle black here and I should really stop doing that because I'm black as well.  Or not singing loudly as well.  So...I'll stop.  But seriously, get some more altos in the alto section.  The sopranos have too many people, the altos have none).  And (we're back at school now, the subject of school) I want to get sleep next spring.

B. Don't take 17 units.  It may be fun.  But no.  Take 18 instead!  Actually, I don't know what I'll be taking next year.  I have a general idea, but I still have to make a schedule and all and...registration's next week I think.

And they cut out interesession during January because of budget cuts.  Now what will I do during January?

...

Probably watch TV.  And do housework.  But my mind--it will suffer.  I will read lots of books that month.

C.  There's no C.  Um...I still have to see a counselor and figure out how to transfer, because I still have required classes to take and so it's looking as if I'll be at community college for a 3rd year this time next year.  But note to self: do not be afraid to see counselor.  They're there to help you.

Um...

Meme?

Step One
* Make a post that contains 10 holiday wishes. Your wishes can be anything from simple, fandom-related things (an icon just for you), to medium (a DVD movie), to something really big (new car/computer/house/TV). But just remember; make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
* Just remember, if you wish for real life things, please make sure your address or your email is listed so you can get them!

Step Two
* Surf around to see who has posted their list.
* If you see a wish that you can grant, make them come true!
* Take a few hours and create an icon or write a story for them - even if you think you stink at it. Or, if you have something they’ve wished for and no longer want yours – perhaps a gift certificate – that would be wonderful too!
