I'm a geek.  I admit it.  Why else would I buy Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in German at a One Dollar Bookstore?  (Note: OMG, used books!  Sure, it's not replacing Barnes and Noble, but I found the hardback version of the 3rd book of the Codex Alera and decided to get it even though I have the paperback version.  I was like, 'What the hell, it's $1 anyway' and bought it.  And then I bought Harry Potter in German, 2 Agatha Christie related books, and one about the time Shakespeare lived in.)

I've been purusing over it and...wow.  I've never read German before, but I've got the basic words down.  Like 'und' and 'der' and 'hatten' and 'ich' means 'I', I think :/ and then everything is capitalized.  Like the sentence talking about how Lily Potter was Petunia's sister--they capitalized the German word for sister.  And when Harry was at King's Cross and see's Mrs. Weasley--the word for sons was capitalized as well as the word for hair.  And the word for eyes is always capitalized--I believe that's 'augen'.  They must have this weird freaky thing to capitalize all pronouns or something?  IDK.  Or maybe it's the way the book was translated to German...

and 'sachte(?)' means said.  Yeah, I've got some words down.  Some others...not so much.

I mean it's not like French or Spanish.  I'm pretty sure German is not a romance language and I can't use my knowledge in Latin vocabulary to recognize German words and what they mean.  Because nothing looks like any Latin word I've seen when I took Latin classes.  They're all...foreign to me.

On that note, I really want HP in Latin now.  Just because.  And maybe French.  And Spanish.

It's fun learning a new language :P when, you know, you don't have to learn it and you're only reading a book written in another language.

Which brings me to school.  It's good so far.  I've seen people I recongize from school.  I'm a little behind on readings, but I'm taking 17 units, and being lazy and re-reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and not reading school books, but hopefully I'll get caught up this weekend.  My teacher for calculus has this...not horrible, but it was really hard to understand sort of accent, like Korean accent or something.  He can speak English, but not all together well.  But I'm starting to understand him, so that's the important thing.

My pre-calc teacher had this accent, but I think his was a little easier to understand, in retrospect.  But whatever.  I'll try to do well in calculus.

My English teacher.  Wow.  He's my favorite of all the teachers.  He's like Bohen and Namba combined, if they had taught English and not math and history (respectively).  He just has this humor that is just so...humorous.  Like what Bohen had.  *sigh* Bohen was awesome.  I miss high school.

...anyways, yeah, my English teacher is awesome.  We've read Gilgamesh so far, but we're going to be getting into Illiad, The Odyssey, Dante, Chaucer (yay!), and some more works I can't remember.  But the class seems pretty good so far, and, coincidentally, it sort of coincides with my history class.  I didn't plan it that way, I just chose the classes, but my history class is World Civilizations Since the 16th Century and the English class is Survey of World Literature.  That's pretty awesome.

And says all the more that my interests like in learning stuff like European history...which is why I'm shooting to transfer to UCI, hopefully this year once I meet with a counselor and see if I can transfer (which I think I'm able to) and how to transfer and where to get the paperwork and what I have to do.  (I feel old at community college...and it's too easy.)  Which hopefully I'll do that on the 15th when I go in for my appointment.  'Cause I finally got over my fear and called on the phone and made an appointment.  (IDK.  I have a weird talking-on-the-phone fear.  And calling-people-on-the-phone fear.)

So yeah, school's okay, I'm learning German, I've discovered a One Dollar Bookstore.  Life's good.  I just have to not fall behind in my classes now.  So I guess I'll go get started on catching up then :D
