Done with UCI
I am now an alumna of UCI.  I hold a B.A. in anthropology and European Studies (with an emphasis in medieval studies) and I don't know what I want to do with my life or with careers or anything.

Whatever.  I'm done with undergraduate studies and it's a kind of bittersweet feeling, personally.  I spent three years at community college and three years at UCI and I'm just going to miss that feeling of being a student.

Although I do know I want to go back for grad school in the way-off future, hopefully (maybe for something medieval?  It is a favorite subject of mine...although I wouldn't say no to a language program, preferably in Russian, or IDK.  I'll deal with that in the future).

These past few weeks have been hectic for me and so I just haven't updated a whole lot.

The important things that happened:

-I finished my European Studies thesis!  It's called 'From Geoffrey of Monmouth to Geoffrey Chaucer: The Political Portrayal of Knights and Chivalry in Medieval Literature'.  I must admit that I didn't see the paper to be ending up the way it did when I started thinking about the thesis--I mean I knew from the start that I wanted to focus on knights in medieval society, but the fact that I ended up analyzing how knights were represented in literature was something I honestly did not see coming.

I kind of blame the professor who guided the whole seminar for leading me down the path of analyzing literature.  Seriously.  Because otherwise I wouldn't have even looked at literature at all.  And I did.

The paper is far from perfect, but it's my own paper and I got to shape its argument and battle with it and have writer's block over it and I'm proud of it.  (I swear I had writer's block!  Seriously.  My original argument: Chaucer's represenation of knights and chivalry is different!  And then one night I had an epiphany and the argument became 'knights and chivarly were portrayed for political and religious purposes!'  And after that the paper became easier to write.  Before that it was causing me a lot of stress and grief.  So, yeah, I discovered that it's possible to get writer's block on a research paper.)

The one thing that amazes me is that this whole idea of a thesis started last year in around October and back then I knew I wanted to write about knights and the crusades, but I didn't know how much it would change.

-I had to give a presentation of my thesis in front of faculty members 0_0 professors, mainly, and some of my fellow classmates who also had to write a thesis.  But still OMG it was just too scary and I just hated it and I didn't like it and I don't like speech presentations...although at least it wasn't in Russian, so there's that.  (At UCLA last year for my Russian class I had to give a presentation about a city and the speech had to be in Russian.) (Although, TBH, I would totally prefer to give a presentation in Russian.)

-I had too many final papers to write.  That's because I had no midterms but, hindsight being 20/20 and all, I would prefer midterms over final papers.  Although I only had one final test to really study for and the rest I just had to do mad-dash researching and writing and, you know, NaNoWriMo taught me how to do a lot of focusing on writing things and so the writing was relatively easy.

Except for the anthro paper--I just had trouble with arguing that and the whole format of that paper.

-I'm hoping I got good grades this quarter

So, now that school is out of the way, now it's time to talk about fandom news:

-still slightly obsessed with Star Trek (AOS only) and everything Kirk/Spock.
-made an Odd Couple music video

I think this one turned out quite well.

-made a Star Trek music video:

This one was is one of my favorites :D

-I need to get caught up with Psych
-I just finished watching season 2 of Gilmore Girls and I need to watch more.  (Yes, I like that show.  I like the writing--the writing is witty.  If it wasn't for the writing, and the insane amount of pop culture references that I adore, then I wouldn't watch the show.  And I like the characters.  And I don't know why I'm listing reasons to defend myself for liking a show...)
-Jared Padalecki being in Gilmore Girls made me want to start up my re-watch of Supernatural, so I'm doing that again now.  I'm onto episode 4 of season 1.  I forgot how bad some of the plots were--especially in episode 3--it's like the father just shows up out of the blue at the end when Dean and Sam find the bike--how did he know they were there?  And, yeah, the episode has Amy Acker in it but the episode isn't all that good.
-James Donald and Richard Attenborough starred in another movie together!  It's called Conduct Unbecoming and I don't know how good it is but I just got it on Netflix and I can't wait until I watch it because it's James Donald and Richard Attenborough! :D
-I'm donating platelets again on Thursday.  I asked if I could bring my own film and they said yes so I'm going to bring The Great Escape.  I've got nothing against all the amazing films the center has (they have Avengers, Inception, The Hobbit, Toy Story 3...).  It's just lately The Great Escape has become my 'time to unwind and watch a film to calm down' type of film.  (I'm not overly obsessed with it anymore but maybe only slightly obsessed with it now.)
-Much Ado About Nothing.  Amazing.  I watched it earlier this month in LA and it was one of the screenings that Joss Whedon, Clark Gregg, Amy Acker, Tom Lenk, and Alexis Denisof were doing a Q+A at and I was in row D at the theater (they had assigned seating) so I was closer to Whedon & co. than I was when I was at Wondercon.
-I saw Whedon live in person twice this year.  Wow.  I don't think I'll ever have a chance at getting his autograph but still :D it's mind blowing.
-I'm watching a movie called Charade (or Charades--I don't remember the name).  It stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, but the main reason I'm watching it is because it also stars James Coburn and Walter Matthau.  I'm hoping they interact at some point in the film--that would be awesome.  (Also, apparently my grandparents used to live in the same neighborhood as Matthau back in the '70s/'80s because they saw Matthau walking his dog in the neighborhood.

They also lived across the street from Ronald Reagan.
-I also started watching Twin Peaks.  I've never watched it before and Amazon Prime has the episodes and so I'm watching it on there.  So far I find it slightly funny--maybe it's just slightly cheesy.  And I can't believe it was made in the '90s.  It seems like it was made earlier, like in the '80s.
-my cousin is a boom operator in the entertainment industry and he's worked with Mumford and Sons and I'm slightly jealous of him.  I mean it.  I think it's mostly because I really want to see Mumford & Sons in concert someday.  (Also on my list of 'bands to see in concert' would be Sigur Ros, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and Cat Stevens/Yusuf.  So far the only singers/bands I've seen are Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull and Mika.  And actually I'm planning on seeing Ian Anderson again in July in LA because just to see him perform the entirety of Thick as a Brick only one time wasn't enough to satisfy me and I wanted to see the entire performance again.)

Hopefully I'll update more this month now that I'm done with stressing out for school.  I do need to start doing something, though, even if it's volunteering.  I would prefer a job, though, I just have to make the effort to apply (I'm really lazy at the moment).  Or an internship would be good.  The only thing that's stopping me is that there's a possibility I may move to San Diego later this summer with a friend, so if I happen to get an internship now, then I would only be there for at least a month or two, and this one I have my eye on requires a person to stay in the internship for three months, so...

I'll get to work someday on replying to all the messages left on the past journal entry.

There's a strike going on.  (I know strike isn't the right word...one of those marches.  Protest, that's it!

My brain is really working today *sarcasm*)

yes, there's a protest going on, don't know what it's about, but protests going on makes me actually feel more like I'm at UCI.  Because protests didn't really happen at community college a whole lot.

My TV shows for fall have seriously narrowed down.  To Castle, HIMYM, NCIS: Los Angeles, The Defenders, and Supernatural.  And when the USA shows comes back on, Psych, White Collar, and Covert Affairs.

Yes, I have given up watching a lot of shows.  Because a: I don't have the time to play catch-up and b: some I fell out of interest with.

Anyway, Supernatural.

Supernatural )

Farscape )

Anyway, this brings me to a point: icons.

I'm making a ton of icons for this land challenge (which is due October 25 and I'm really behind) and most of them are Farscape and I know this is primarily a fannish journal of mine but I'm going to use it for any icons/fanfiction/etc. I do for challenges.

(Though I am thinking of IDK starting a personal icon journal?  Not that anyone really likes my icons and/or wants to use them as their own but it's just a personal idea for me...)

although my love for making icons will falter by the time I'm finished with the challenge icons.  There's only so much I can make before I get tired of making them.

Just warning anyone who reads this that a ton of icons will be posted in the near future.

I can't think of anything else to talk about.  School's going okay (I'm busy, as in extremely).  The bus ride is fun (because I get a lot of reading done).  Different things are going on in my life and I sort of have to sit and make a list of what I absolutely need to do versus what I want to do but I don't really need to do at that moment.  Tests are coming up that I should study for.

So I'm sort of busy.

(Also that's the reason I dropped at least the majority of the TV shows I said I'd watch this fall.)

Okay first: School started again!  Yay! \o/ :D

Second: I survived my first week at UCI!  Another yay!

Third: it's so much different from community college 0_0 besides the campus being extraordinary larger (as well as the library), there's just this air about the place that makes it so much different.  Like people want to learn.  And so they won't really text in class a whole lot because people want to be there in the classes they signed up for.

Okay, my classes:

-medieval architect.  Just a note: I am so totally planning on hopefully either majoring/minoring in European Studies with a focus on medieval Europe.  I just have to make it more official by filling out paperwork and making sure it's acknowledged.  But I decided to go ahead and start taking classes required for the major/minor anyway because I'm like that and so I decided to choose medieval architect.  (It's an art history class.)

Best thing about the class?  All the students are females :D not a single male in the class.  IDK but I just find that awesome.

-a social science course required for all who are majoring within the school of social sciences.  Anthro falls under that category so of course I had to take the course.  It's big.  Like lecture hall type of big.  The teacher uses a microphone to speak to the class.

-music of Indonesia and Philippines.  It's an anthro course.  And so far it's awesome.  There's no required textbook and the teacher recommends we take notes on everything he says.  And there's open notes mid-term and final (yay!).  The best thing?  The teacher has to go to Turkey for a series of lectures he's giving and so he's going to be away from September 29 to October 10 and he added that lectures will be posted online.  I can only assume that means I don't have to attend class the days I have anthro because the lectures will be online.

-a history class on monsters and borders during medieval Europe.  My reasons for taking it: re: see above (medieval architect).

So those are my classes.  Honestly, I think I should have signed up for one more.  Because so far I have 16 units and the highest I can take is up to 21.  I just see myself getting bored.  IDK.  I like being kept insanely busy.

And the bus?  So relaxing.  Of course, I don't really like the morning bus when a lot of people get on so it's insanely crowded but I'll live.  After all, I am getting so much reading done on the bus, which is awesome.  Though I sort of do feel like I'm missing out on a college experience by not living in a dorm or something.  But then again, the amount of money I'd have to spend if I lived on-campus is not something I wish to think about and so I'll just take the bus instead.

BTW, signed up for the Harry Potter fan club.  (It's called Dumbledore's Anteaters.  DA.  Sort of like Dumbledore's Army.  I just find that amusing.  Plus anteater is the mascot so...yeah...)

It was the only club that seemed even remotely interesting and any fan club is better than no club at all.  Most of the other clubs didn't really appeal to my interests at all.  And sure, I'm not a big Harry Potter fan like I used to be, but whatever.  My mom wanted me to get involved in UCI life so I'm getting involved.  Even if it may be hanging out with a bunch of geeks.  (At least we won't be discussing whether or not Snape is evil.  LOL.  We always debated about that in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy club in high school.  It got a bit tiring after a while but we always joked debating about that just for the amusement.)

There's this comic book store across the campus and I checked that out the other day--it's awesome.  It's well-stocked.  I'm not a big comic reader (aside from Buffy and Angel) so I'm not going to be hanging out there a lot but when the TPBs of Buffy or Angel ever come out at least I'll know where to get them from.

So yes, college is good so far.  I always start a new college year off by re-watching the Buffy episode The Freshman (yes, I know, not a totally exciting tradition, but it's fun to watch) and this year I didn't really do that.  Although I'll try to do that sometime this weekend, only because I like the little tradition I have.

Speaking of shows, I haven't listed the fall TV shows I'm watching (or will watch) this year.

Fall TV Shows )

Yesterday I went to the Can't Stop the Serenity event in Irvine (seriously, didn't know there were so many Firefly fans in OC).  I went with my brother and two other friends, so it was a lot of fun.  And they all were new to the whole Can't Stop the Serenity event (and one hadn't seen Serenity before last night, so she was really new to the whole thing).  There was much fun had and much quotes quoted and, when we saw Dr. Horrible, there were much songs sang.

And there is a person all tired because of all the fun (that'd be me)(hell I was tired Friday even.  Went to bed at 10 PM as opposed to 11.  And I didn't get to bed until 1 AM this morning.  Because I got home at 12).

I really should go do some reading for school.  Or any kind of reading in general.  Or TV watching :/ or sleep.

This weekend at my town is Tustin Tiller Days (a carnival/fair and parade that's set up at a middle school just within walking distance of my house).  In the newspaper the other Thursday, the Tustin newspaper, they mentioned a few stars who'd be in the parade this year.  Some ones they mentioned?  Robert Picardo (Stargate Atlantis, Star Trek), Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager), and John de Lancie from TNG.

Now I hope they aren't lying about this.  Because it's too awesome for it to be not true.  I'd kill someone if the newspaper lied about this.  Now, if they aren't lying, and they'll really be in the parade, well...I haven't been to the parade in about 10 or so years?  I think I'll go this year :D come on, it's Robert Picardo.  If he is in the parade, I can brag that he was in my home town.  All bragging aside, I just think it's really awesome and I hope it's true.  (IDK why I distrust the newspaper so much.  Because it's awesome so it has to be true.)

Off to watch HIMYM.  And maybe sleep and read and do homework.

Yay! Dr. Horrible won an emmy! And other stuff

Taking a break from doing homework.  Or just thinking of school in general.

Well, I have to go do homework for English now.  And planning what to watch/read this weekend because yay!  Besides homework and everything, I have a free weekend.  Because last weekend was this choir retreat I had to go to so I had to socialize with other young adults and hang out with them until 2 in the morning of Sunday playing Murder in the Dark (a live version of Mafia, the game with the cards and the mafia and you get to kill the townspeople) and singing practically the entire weekend.

So this weekend I am resting.  While doing homework.

Also: yay!  Dr. Horrible won an emmy!  As if it wouldn't :D I would've been fine it BSG's short on-line thing also won, but I was rooting/wishing/hoping/(forgot it was even nominated till it won) for it.  Yay!  I'll do watch Commentary: The Musical in celebration.  Because I haven't watched the entire Commentary: The Musical yet :/ I'll get around to it.

I'm thinking of doing [info]whedon_santa.  Just to try something new.  Just to branch out in the LJ world and be less shy.  (I should start doing that by actually replying to comments left on my journal, yeah?  It's not that I don't love you, LJ friends, it's just that I start writing a comment  and then think, 'Does this make me sound dumb/stupid/whatever?  Does it sound okay?' and I get all self-conscious and don't comment back and then think, 'I'm a bad LJ friend...' so, I love all of you (who read this), even if I don't comment a lot/enough/not as much as I probably should.)

...yeah, I don't get why I have that problem exactly.  Note to self: be less comment-shy on LJ.

Oh, and what's with all the celebrity deaths?  Patrick Swayze (only watched 3 of his movies.  Technically, 2, since I didn't even know he was in the sounds-very-obscure-movie Tall Tales.  Seriously.  I watched that, like, once when I was young.  I think Mom bought it because she was baby-sitting at the time and thank God it wasn't another Land Before Time video.  Didn't know he was in that 'till I looked on IMDB and saw he was in it)(the other two were Dirty Dancing and The Outsiders).  Henry Gibson (The Blues Brothers.  That's about it...)  Mary Travers (apparently of that Peter, Paul, and Mary group.  She sang Leaving on a Jet Plane or however that song is titled).  Toys 'R' Us giraffe.  (:D saw it on AOL and I was all like, 'There's a giraffe?  I thought it was a cartoon.  How can it die?')

Santiago is a weird community college.  Just for my 4.0 last semester they sent me a Certificate of Achievement for getting a GPA of 3.5 or better last semester.  For "achieving semester academic honors" and there's that little gold stamp thingy.

...um...I miss getting ice cream for recognition :) (in high school they gave out a certificate and gave out ice cream).  Um...I guess it's nice though :/ bit weird.

Ooh!  I dropped a class!  My first time ever :) I don't really feel guilty since taking the class and realizing what I had to do in the class put even more stress on me.  It was Music 101, Appreciation of Music, and it was a 7 AM class (another reason for dropping it--7 AM is torture).  Also, I had already fulfilled the requirement that music 101 would have filled, so I was just a) taking it for fun and b) taking it because it added up to 17 units--what can I say.  I like torturing myself :) but 17 units is easy so it's not so much torture.

But the class...we had to do three concert reviews and turn them in at specific weeks and that was mostly the reason for dropping the class, because I knew I couldn't commit to going out and finding three concerts to see in the time span that I had.  I mean I'm already busy with two choirs at church, and the big musical at church for spring, plus my other classes.

I just didn't feel like I could commit to that in the class so I decided to drop it.  So a) I feel less stressful this semester and b) I can sleep in (finally) and c) it doesn't feel like I have this huge weight on my shoulders about seeing three concerts.

...now I'm starting to think it was selfish of me for dropping music 101 but I really did feel like I was already crushed for time this semester with what's going on in my life already, as far as being busy goes.

My religion, magic, and witchcraft class is awesome though.  We were talking about a chapter on mythology and the chapter mentioned the trickster myth which reminded me of Supernatural ('cause wasn't there a trickster in that show?  I'm pretty sure there was).  And thinking about Supernatural made me miss it.  I like the first two seasons better than season 3 (and I have yet to see season 4 yet).  It's like seasons 1 and 2 you couldn't see where it was going in the end.  I mean, come on, the season finale episodes for both seasons?  Totally didn't see those happening.  But when season 3 began I could sort of see where it was heading for the finale, which really...it didn't really ruin the show for me, but it...I was guessing what was going to happen at the end with Dean and all before the finale would air.  So the surprise element was totally thrown out the window when I saw where it was heading (I like to be surprised--if I can guess where a show is heading for the season finale, I tend to not be that surprised/shocked)(good example--season 5 finale of Angel.  Didn't expect it to end that way).

I have been following this season of Supernatural--reading up on it--as to where it's supposed to be heading and all I can think back to is season 3 when I could also tell where it was going to be heading.

I think that's why I'm not watching it anymore, even though I'm still interested in it.  It lost that element of surprise...well, for me.

Anyways...

in math we started chapter 2 (on limits!...I'm a geek, I love limits in math) and the teacher said, 'And that was your first calculus problem you guys did.  We did the impossible' and he kept on saying, 'We did the impossible' a few times and I'm just all thinking, 'And that makes us mighty?' So...total Firefly nerd/geek here.

Which reminds me...

And I am ending this post with:

Dollhouse.

February 13th.

Joss Whedon...and Eliza Dushku.  (And Amy Ackers).  And there's this one guy I've seen in the previews for Dollhouse and I've already got a crush on that character and I have no idea who he is.

But anyways, I am counting down the days, quite anxiously, might I add, to Feb. 13th (it sort of throws me off balance--it's a Friday :/ but I'm not worried for Dollhouse :) not one bit.  Okay, slightly worried, but more hopeful.  I just want two seasons maximum!...please Fox...don't kill it off like you did Firefly...)

So today I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up volume 2 of Angel: After the Fall.  Now I'm more or less caught up with Angel "season 6" at the moment.

A little bit less, actually.

I've just been getting the TPB/THBs of Buffy/Angel respectively, and haven't really been getting the latest issues as they are coming out, so I'm not all the way caught up with Buffy "season 8" and Angel "season 6" (see, I'm putting them in quotations, becausse they aren't really seasons.  I mean they're continuations of Buffy and Angel, but in comic book form, and aren't really seasons).

Which reminds me.

I must confess that I haven't been watching Supernatural this season at all.  I think my interest in it is waning.  Don't know why, but I haven't had any interest in seeing the episodes this season.  I mean I taped the season premiere, but I've had no interest in watching it so far.

I've been watching this show on BBCA called Primeval.  It's good so far.  I've caught the first episode when it aired and sort of missed some episodes and now I'm watching it again.  What the show lacks in special effects the strong characters make up for.  I like the characters so much in the show.
